Katarina Bervar Sternad
Chief Commissioner
Katarina Bervar Sternad, born in 1975 in Ljubljana, holds a university degree in law and has extensive knowledge of constitutional, administrative, criminal, and international law.
Until assuming the position of President of the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption in April 2026, she worked at PIC – Legal Center for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment. Since 2010, she had also served as its director, gaining extensive experience in leading an independent advocacy organization. In her professional work, she has primarily focused on the rule of law, fundamental rights, transparency, and the accountability of public office holders. She has systematically monitored the compliance of legislation and its actual implementation in practice. She prepared legal analyses, national reports, and expert opinions for domestic and international institutions. She actively participated in legislative procedures and advocacy processes, striving to strengthen the integrity of public institutions, reinforce accountability mechanisms, prevent abuses of power, and protect the public interest.
She regularly appears in public and takes part in professional discussions on integrity, ethics, and the prevention of systemic irregularities.
She served as a member of the Interministerial Commission for Human Rights and other advisory and working bodies of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. As a co-founder of the Legal Network for the Protection of Democracy, she actively contributed to civil oversight of government authorities.
In 2023, she received an award from the President of the Republic of Slovenia for her contribution to the protection of human rights in the Republic of Slovenia. As a member of the Legal Network for the Protection of Democracy, she also received the European Citizen’s Prize the year before, awarded by the European Parliament.
